About Us
Introduction
I am the owner and design principal of röös design + consulting, an information technology firm specializing in Web, Instructional Design and Digital Marketing. I am currently teaching Web design classes, including WordPress, at Oakton College in Des Plaines, IL USA. I have a master’s degree in urban planning with extensive experience developing Web based Geographic Information Systems (GIS) projects, and am a past Chicago chapter president of the Urban & Regional Information Systems Association (URISA). I am a certified ESRI instructor for ArcView 3.x and a contributing author to ESRI Press, ArcNews and ArcUser magazine.
I graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a master’s degree in Urban Land Use Planning, including an internship with the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission (NIPC). I worked for the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) of Northeastern Illinois, and several large multidisciplinary civil engineering and technology consulting firms before forming my own business in 2002. At the RTA, I worked in both operations planning and strategic planning. My responsibilities included system performance analysis, corridor studies, ridership forecasting, and establishing an enterprise GIS program.
I built my first HTML page in 1995, started building Web sites with Microsoft FrontPage starting in 1998, and then switched over to Adobe Dreamweaver in 2008. For the past 5 years, my emphasis has been on building dynamic Web sites using open-source technology, but my passion is using GIS for analyzing the urban built environment. Cities are some of the most complex environments on earth. I believe this offers many opportunities to use the full potential of the analytical power inherent in GIS for GeoDesign and Internet technologies for communicating with the masses. I was most influenced in my career choice and design philosophy by my city design professor and former NIPC executive director, Matthew L. Rockwell.
Technical Background
Currently building static and dynamic Web sites (since 2002) using the HTML5/CSS3/Javascript technology stack and MySQL/PHP, MAMP/LAMP technology stack. Extensive experience building standards based Web sites using popular Content Management Systems, primarily using Drupal 6-8, WordPress and Joomla. Expert level skills using the full CS6 suite of Adobe software including: Acrobat® 10 Pro, Photoshop CS6 + Creative Cloud, Illustrator® CS6, Dreamweaver® CS6 + Creative Cloud, Flash® CS6 Professional, Flex 3.0 ActionScript, InDesign CS4, LiveCycle Designer, FireWorks CS6 and Contribute. Expert level skills building Web mapping applications using the ESRI GIS platform. Programming includes, JavaScript, PHP/MySql, Java and Python. Extensive experience with Microsoft products.
