My Story
I started taking guitar classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music in 1982. I heard an ad on the radio about an open house the school was having on a Friday night at 909 W. Armitage. The ad said “we’ll supply the guitar and by the end of the night you’ll be able to play a song”.
This was a great opportunity because in 1982 I already knew that I was going to learn to play guitar. I knew this back in 1972 when I was going to Triton College. Every week Chicago area folk singers would play in the Fireside Lounge in the early eaving. I didn’t realize it at the time but I was seeing some of the greats, Jim Post, Bonnie Koloc, John Prine, and many others. This was my first exposure to this type of music. I used to watch their hands very closely, thinking how can they do that. About the same time I saw Leo Kottke in concert in the the Triton College cafeteria-same reaction, but even more intense.
I was in school playing on the ice hockey team and thinking about getting my bachelors degree, so I was too busy to start lessons. It took another 10 years before I finally signed up at the Old Town School of Folk Music (OTSFM) for my first lesson at the age of 29. It happened a week after graduation from Northeastern Illinois University, I finally felt I had time to devote to lesions.
I started my lessons at the OTSFM Evanston branch at the Noyes Center. My first teacher Mike (last name I don’t recall) convinced me to switch from playing left-handed, yes, I started out playing guitar LH like my idol Paul McCartney. After Mike I had Myrna Lande, then Philip Baron. I still see Phil today, and yes he never stopped being the teacher. I continued with lessons up to 1998 at 909 W. Armitage. My instructors included: Eric Lugosch, Mark Dvorak, Michael Miles, Collin Bunn, Ted Parrish, and Roberto Acer.
In 2018 I started taking lessons again when I joined the Friday afternoon Beatles Ensemble with Steve Levitt. I arrived to class early that day, I was standing in room B7 when in walks Steve. I introduced myself and asked “are we supposed to already have these songs memorized?” He just stared at me and said “why do you?” NO! I said. I was clueless about the class. As of today (June 2023) I’m still in the group.
It’s been a great adventure.
